A Short Trip Inside MIT’s Media Lab

I was shown this new technology last night during the Futures of Entertainment Afterparty. I am happy it exists. The UI is exceedingly smooth and enjoyable to use. What a relief. The was built off of the original prototype system used in Minority Report.

New gloves (he said that eventually they wanted the gloves to not have to be worn, and for the device itself to be able to recognize gestural movement.

More sensors — there’s a set of twelve needed for the full control of the system. Less can be used, but the resolution of movement suffers with each lost sensor.

speaking to viral culture and the nature of marketing and advertising.

A quilt is the first thing you will find if you Google for “Convergence.”

We are chasing after a cultural understanding of what Convergence means. It is not a magical set of links between technologies. Instead, convergence is a cultural process. Ideas about brands will play themselves out across all possible media platforms. The convergence is in our heads and in our social interactions together. In a networked society, people are increasing forming knowledge communities to pool information and work together to solve problems they could not confront individually.

We call that collective intelligence.

We are seeing an emergence of a new form of participatory culture. (a contemporary version of folk cutlure!!!) as consumers take media in their own hands reworking its content to serve their personal and collective interests.

what is the difference between mass media and participatory culture? Where are the gates between them and why are they there? Participatory culture has been largely embraced by most of the creative industries.

What is the next step past this? We are going into a space that we don’t yet understand. We are speaking about these issues in relationship to web 2.0.  Web 2.0 was the beginning of participation and convergence culture.

The debate is beginning. There is a cultural shift in the way that companies relate to consumers.

In addition there is an increasingly aware consumer base, they know they are contributing content. They are savvy consumers. But the consumer operates under a different logic with different motives. The consumer wants to bargain for identity and rights.

“I am not your user generated content.”

The myth of ‘viral media’ begins to emerge. There is a promise of viral media cash.. magic for corporations… But what is it? How to do it? How do we control the flow of revenue and brands?

We need to shatter the myth of viral media. Additionally the consumer has the myth of ‘memes’. Both of these draw on biology. Why is this? Memes and viral both relate to infection.

Authentic Enthusiasm is currently seeking enthusiastic people to present areas of research, expertise, or subjects of interest to the general public during our free,1 hour, weekly presentation series. For example: the novels of Balzac, microbiology, finger painting, hypnosis, how to build websites, etc.
Free, public, diverse, and weekly.
Each month will be curated by one person who will be selecting and inviting the four presenters. Presentations are scheduled to begin the first week in January 2009 at Legare’s cafe on SE Clinton & 16th in Portland, Oregon. Locations will also change.

Makerlab: Infinite Edition

I am not sure how much time we all spent at Makerlab during this period. I beleive I arrived at IGLOO on Friday night and stayed clear until Sunday. Bram Pitoyo stayed too. We had a long series of discussions, foods, and sweetopian awesomeness.

At one point, the number of Macbooks at Makerlab reached critical mass. The technosocial gravity of Paige was too much for them to overcome and they quickly aggregated around her. Reid’s explanation was that it “probably had something to do with recontextualizing paradigms”.

This probably has something to do with recontextualizing paradigms.

Uchi

One part of a binary, it has long been asserted as a major structuring principle of Japanese society.

Uchi describes a located perspective: the in-group, the us-facing group of the world {it is} a center of belonging and attachment…Uchi defines who you are through shaping the language, the use of space, and social interactions. Uchi instantly implies the drawing of boundaries between us and them, self and other…

Depending on the context Uchi can be any in-group: company, school, club, nation.

Uchi is not, however, simply home or inside but a circle of attachment; a locus of identity. It is often engendered by reference to its antipode, Soto. To be sure, any society provides a shifting set of associations for its members; ones that can be defined variously, in terms of geographic, historical, genetic, social, moral,  economic and political membership. However, in Japan, the fact that nearly all social relations are defined and evaluated in terms of belongingness and difference is important in understanding the structure, logic, and meanings of societal activity. This, we would argue, comma is no less true on Japanse TV.
